What does the PS3 or the squeezebox or the transporter, etc. Is this what Barry has been talking about in his current thread? That is.the effects of trancoding on the fly? My concern is that currently FLAC is played with an Maudio player, and I'm not sure what that is doing to the sound? Video playback is choppy for me, but I assume that is my athlon processor.about 5 years old I guess. I installed an internet radio program which has hundreds of stations that I can now stream. ![]() So then I only use the receiver when I want to listen to 5.1.I am liking this. Going by anything other than directory tree will necessitate scrolling forever.Īs for the output.I'm not sure how it outputs anything above 16/44. ![]() If I were using Windows I would likely use TVersity which when the PS3 sees it, offers you the option of folder view (directory tree) or via Artist, Album, Album Artist, Genre etc. The reason I use Fuppes is because it is the only streaming software I have found that works near perfectly under linux which my server runs. These media servers take the FLAC file and convert it on the fly to PCM which the PS3 sees without a problem. Transcoding is necessary on the fly so the PS3 can play the songs. Fuppes is the media server I use though if you use Windows on the server you could use TVserity or TwonkyVision to stream and both transcode without much configuring (as opposed to fuppes). If you have your folders organized well on the server, then it will take seconds to get to the album you want. Linux can be installed and can decode more formats depending on the media player used.but if you are streaming from a server the Sony gui is very nice.Īs for scrolling, this will happen if you have 1000 albums that are disorganized. I have a 60 GB Playstation and I play FLAC files through the PS3 every day for hours on end for my wife and 2 children. What about fan noise while running Linux? Is the fan controlled by PS3 firmware or the OS? Obviously it depends on which production model it is. Some say the fan is only noisy while upscaling DVDs (a software feature requiring a lot of CPU load), others have permanent noise problems. I've read many divergent comments about fan noise. Has anyone some practical experience with this? Is the playback reliable? How is the usability (software interface, use with optional remote)?Ģ) Optical digital output: Does the PS3 optical output (S/PDIF) support 96/24 PCM or is it limited to 48kHz? It would be nice if I could play my Classic Records DAD discs and output the 96/24 sound to my DAC (and thereby completely replace my DVD player)ģ) Fan noise. BTW, I would buy the 40GB PS3 without SACD support, I already have a better SACD player.ġ) FLAC files: The Sony software does not support FLAC, but if Linux is installed (as a dual-boot option), Linux-based media players supporting many more formats can be run. There are plenty of PS3 websites, but apart from the site I could not find much advanced info on questions that interest audiophiles. ![]() I currently use my PC for playing music files, and if the PS3 could be made to work like a Squeezebox this would really make it much more universal. ![]() It would be great if it could be used for playing lossless music files as well, through my DAC. I'm thinking of buying a Playstation 3 for Blu-ray playback.
